This video was inspired by a single fact: there are more potential combinations of a randomized deck of cards than there are atoms on earth. Well, that’s wild! A lot of video games use playing cards, so I peeled back that aesthetic layer and examined why cards are so flexible, eternal, and popular.
With such a potentially broad topic, I needed to anchor it around a strong hook. I judged that people would be intrigued by the idea that an object as ubiquitous as the playing card might still baffle the experts. It worked! This was Polygon’s top-viewed longform video in 2025.
