I’m kind of obsessed with the canard of historical accuracy: how difficult it is to assess, how informed it is by bias, and how we’re always learning more about history that changes our assumptions.
This video is about in-game representations of the JFK assassination, and what they’re doing to our brains! JFK is the perfect vehicle by which to explore historical accuracy. His assassination was highly documented and researched. But also, 65% of Americans believe that we’ve been fed a lie about his death. Video games can complicate that. I interviewed Ph.D Carrie Andersen about prosthetic memories — invented recollections of events that can be influenced by the media we consume. It’s a topic that’s only become more relevant with the influx of AI-generated imagery online, purporting to represent reality.
